You know him as one of the most recognizable faces on television. In his 50+ year theater, television and film career, Sam Waterston is perhaps best known for his his role as Jack McCoy in the tv show Law & Order. He is also Massachusetts homegrown!
Sam Waterston was born in 1940 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He is the third of four children born to George Chychele Waterston, a Scottish immigrant, and Alice Tucker Atkinson.
In the newly released 1950 U.S. Federal Census, Sam, age 9, is found living in North Andover, Massachusetts with is father, mother, sisters Roberta and Ellen, and brother George Jr.
His father, George, is listed as an English Professor, Ph.D., at a private prep school and his mother is an art teach at a private prep school. Though not listed in the census a little research shows that the school was the Brooks School, pleasantly located on Lake Cochichewick. The Waterston family lived close by on Great Pond Road.
The census also shows that his father was an immigrant from Scotland and that his mother was native born in Massachusetts.
